Yes, students from so-called lower class backgrounds and families from less income, although this label could harm a student latter. Students have be given help, although placing labels such as free meals, milk tokens or "That student is on state aid" could be detrimental for particular students, and beneficial for other students. Labels for students could be good and bad.

Re: Is labeling some students as ‘at risk’ appropriate?

I agree with you ~very nice

Re: Is labeling some students as ‘at risk’ appropriate?

Of course a principal is going to say that, and notice how she didn't give you a straight answer. I would suggest switcthing shoes for a moment and try and picture 'our kids' being the minority and how we, they might feel being 'at risk'. It's not right either way. Rather than simply labeling kids maybe school systems around the US should stop worrying about how much money they can receive from worthless assessment tests and actually teach the students something valuable.

Re: Is labeling some students as ‘at risk’ appropriate?

That Sounds interesting, i agree with you. How about we just focus on the idea that they are just children, students, people. Who's to say they have a "hurdle" to overcome, maybe these students you refer to so lowly dont believe there is anything "at risk" about them, ever thought they might be content with themselves?
